At Macalaster Bicknell Company of New Jersey, we offer a wide selection of high tech glass products for laboratory use. From Boston rounds to round bottom flasks, we’ve been a preferred source of glass tubing, rods and supplies since 1950.
Boston Rounds
Boston rounds, or Winchester bottles, have cylindrical shapes, no handles and a short, curved shoulder. The neck is threaded to accommodate a screw cap. Although traditionally used in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, the versatile bottle is also great for beverage and body care product storage.
The bottles are easy to label and very durable. Boston rounds can accommodate a variety of caps, including bulb droppers, pumps and spray caps. Boston rounds can also come in a variety of colors, including amber, green and blue, in addition to clear glass.
Round Bottom Flasks
Although round bottom flasks sound similar to Boston rounds, they’re actually quite different pieces of glassware. Round bottom flasks are named for their spherical bases. Made of borosilicate glass, the flask has a low coefficient of thermal expansion and high chemical resistance. And because a sphere evenly distributes stress across its surface, the flask is most resistant to fracturing under a vacuum.
The round bottom flask is ideal for laboratory use, specifically during the heating and boiling of liquid. It’s also great for distillation and containing chemical reactions. Unlike Boston rounds, round bottom flasks have smooth, short necks that can accommodate rubber stoppers or laboratory apparatus. The flasks cannot stand by themselves, and must be suspended by a cork ring or placed on special bases.
